The problem

What are you noticing?

Mortar may be powdery or missing. Brick faces may be chipped, cracked, or loose. Stone can shift; a veneer can separate; steps and walkways can settle or break down. Sometimes an older repair looks different from the surrounding masonry or doesn’t stay put.

These are all good reasons to take a closer look. A photo helps Ryan see the area, but the right repair depends on the condition of the masonry around it.

The cause

Why does masonry wear out here?

Omaha and Council Bluffs weather gives walls and steps a lot to deal with. Moisture in open joints can freeze and expand. Salt near walks and entries can be hard on masonry. Age, movement, drainage, and previous repairs can also play a part. Not every crack means the same thing, so treating the cause matters more than hiding the line.

The repair

What can Ryan work on?

A+ Masonry handles grinding, tuckpointing, and repointing mortar joints; brick and stone repair, replacement, and matching; masonry cleaning and sealing; veneer and facade repair or replacement; and historic masonry restoration. Ryan also works on steps, stoops, walkways, retaining walls, and garden walls.

Depending on the condition, the work might be targeted mortar repair, replacing damaged units, or rebuilding a section. If the problem is in a below-grade block wall, see foundation and block wall repair. If it’s above the roofline, see chimney repair.

What should I send Ryan?

Text a close-up and a wider photo showing where the damage sits. Let him know your city and whether the area has changed over time. You can also just call and explain what you’re seeing.

Common questions

A few useful answers.

Is tuckpointing the same as replacing brick?

No. Tuckpointing or repointing addresses mortar joints. If the brick itself is damaged, it may need a different repair or replacement.

Can new masonry match the old?

Ryan works with brick and stone matching where possible. Existing materials, color variation, and age all affect how closely a repair can blend.

Do you work on older masonry?

Yes. Historic masonry restoration is among A+ Masonry’s services. Older materials need to be considered on their own terms rather than treated like a new block wall.
